Thor, god of thunder, possessed a mighty hammer to protect gods and men from the forces of destruction and chaos. He awoke one day to find that his hammer, Mjollnir, was missing. Loki, the fire god, suggested that it had been stolen by a giant and, borrowing a magic robe of feathers from Freyja, flew swiftly and reached the lair of the giants. There he discovered that Thrym, the frost Giant, was the thief.
Thrym agreed to return the hammer only on condition that Freyja came to him as a wife but Freyja refused. The gods suggested to Thor that he go to Thrym's stronghold dressed as the bride, in order to regain the hammer. Thrym was persuaded to produce the hammer and lay it on the lap of the bride, according to custom. Throwing off his veil, Thor seized the mighty weapon and laid Thrym low.
