Black Hawk (Makawikachert) (1767 - 1838)
Black Sparrow Hawk, a chief of the Sauk and Fox Indians born in a Sauk village at the mouth of the Rock River in Illinois. Made a name in battle at eleven and at seventeen lead a war party on an Osage camp and returned with his first scalp. Black Hawk allied himself with the British in the war of 1812. In 1832 he tried to repulse settlers moving westward across the Mississippi and at first was quite successful. However he lost the support of other tribes and most of his warriors were slaughtered at Bad Axe River. He was brought to Ft. Monroe, Virginia and had an audience with President Andrew Jackson. He was released from custody in 1833 and returned to Iowa where he died on a reservation near the Des Moines River.
